Close is a duo exhibition of Dutch artists Suzanne Somer and Welmer Keesmaat, responding to each other’s work, while staying close to themselves and at the same time close to each other. Both artists explore their personal impulses by staying close to their chosen subject matter and by expressing the matter of contact within themselves or with their surroundings.
Suzanne Somer is a Dutch artist attending a four-month artist residency at the Red Gate, located in the artist village of Feijaicun in the outskirts of Beijing. During the residency Suzanne Somer developed her obsession with collecting and combining found objects, both foreign and familiar; objects that awake an emotional response on a subconscious level in herself. By collecting discarded objects and creating a personal archival journal, she re-establishes them as valuable precious artifacts. For her, they exist as universal symbols of humanity, patterns that are repeated in our bodies and in the mechanisms we construct and use everyday.
